90 miles off the coast of florida, Cuba has been subject to intense attention of ideologues since Fidel Castro took power in 1959.
Perhaps parallels can be drawn between Singapore and Cuba, islands who have found radically different ways to build their own national strength.
Castro's cuba however, was not a nation welcome to all. It had struggled through 500 years of colonisation and Castro was determined to make cuba a great independent nation once more.
Castro said "the nation's future, the solutions to its problems, cannot continue to depend on the selfish interests of a dozen big businessmen". More unerringly, he also said "the problem of the republic can only be resolved if we dedicate ourselves to fight for it".
